The Overview Effect

This short documentary by Planetary Collective explores what astronauts, scientists and experts have come to refer to as the “overview effect”: the experience of viewing Earth from the vantage point of stationary orbit. This macro perspective on our world produces a mental collision between two sensations: the sense of how enormous our planet is, and at the same time how small, fragile and alone it is, a “little speck in the cosmic dark,” as Carl Sagan writes. In this documentary, Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell recounts his efforts to grasp the profundity of the “overview effect,” connecting it to the ancient Hindu notion of Savikalpa Samadhi, a state of religious ecstasy in which the individual Soul and the universal Spirit merge together.
